(The Birth of Beanie Buddies!)

September - December, 1998

What a big day!!! September 8, 1998! Wise the owl, in his diary on the Ty site, hinted at a new and exciting product forthcoming. Through his entire month as "InfoBeanie", we were led through Ty offices, etc. as the search continued for the hidden creatures. Hints were dropped almost every day, as we anxiously awaited what the BIG EVENT was going to be....and when! On September 30th, the answer was unveiled. A giant party, with the introduction of nine new original Beanie BUDDIES™ !!! --- Cranberry Teddy, Twigs, Beak, Rover, Royal Blue Elephant, Jake, Quackers, Humphrey, and Stretch. Identical (almost) to their counterpart Beanie Babies™, what an awesome new arrival!!!

The introduction of Tylon® came about, a new fabric created exclusive for Ty. The material is very very soft, difficult to manufacture, and requires being shipped to different factories (in different countries. The whole process takes quite a few months, just to make one bolt. But also in December, shortly after the introduction, Ty announced that there was a Tylon shortage. Immediately following that announcement, Twigs retired! Now we knew THAT one would be impossible to find. But....Ty released a second version of Twigs - for a VERY short time period - sporting a second generation tag. Some report the second generation Twigs to be of higher value that the first!!!

... And Then More ...

January 1999
Then.....along came January! Ty released 14 new Beanie Buddies - Bongo, Bubbles, Chilly, Chip, Erin, Patti, Peking, Pinky, Smoochy, Snort, Squealer, Tracker, and Waddle! The tags were changed a bit for this so-called "second release/generation" of Buddies.

March 1999
March came around....Ty retired another Buddy - Beak. This, remember, was one of the original 9. Beak was also the first Buddy released with a new Beanie Baby counterpart.

April 1999
April's arrival - A total of only 5 Buddies were released on April 1st. Although the smallest release of Buddies until that point, they were also ones that everone couldn't wait to have - Princess, Millinnium, Hope, Fuzz (4 Bears) and Jabber.

June 26, 1999
Along came June and the beginning of several Shows, by Ty. The first Show was in Dallas, Texas! And BOY, what a Show. Two new Buddies were introduced (to Ty retailers only, who attended the Show) - Schweetheart and Inch! And....then off to Atlanta, Los Angeles, etc. for more chances for retailers to order these (as well as three new Beanie Babies and a Pillow Pal). Everyone anxiously awaits - will Ty eventually release these for all retailers to order? Hopefully so, as the new intros are beautiful and quite unique! Patience sits in!

Reports are coming in that a Wingless Quackers Beanie Buddy is showing up in stores. Although not officially announced by Ty, it appears that only a few have been "released". Is this a new version of the Quackers with wings, an error, or a spark to ignite the Buddy interest? Only "tyme" will tell !

For about a week now, rumors have been floating on the sightings of a Wingless Quackers Beanie Buddy. A picture of this Buddy appeared on many websites. Although it appears to be authentic, it has not been officially announced by Ty. Perhaps a "mistake" by Ty, more more than likely a possible spark to ignite the Buddy collection. But a rare find indeed for those lucky enough to capture one!!!

Also today, Ty Warner announced a special offer for all BBOC members, a Clubby Beanie Buddy, with details to follow.

Details on the official Ty BBOC website explained the ordering procedure for BBOC members - A BBOC "Members' Only Exclusive Offer" ! ..... Both Clubby I and Clubby II Beanie Buddies™ were announced on the Ty website, with pictures of both. Clubby I Buddy will be available to Gold Card members only; Clubby II Buddy will be available to Gold and Platinum members. A free set of four Beanie Baby/Beanie Buddy collectors cards will be shipped with each Buddy.

The big day - Ty promised a "big announcement" would be made today! And boy was it! Not only were new Beanie Babies announced, but 13 new Beanie Buddies also made the list! This made is the 6th Buddy announcement by Ty, and what an interesting group. The Britannia Buddy rumor had been floating around for a couple of weeks, with some claiming it to be just that - a rumor. But the UK Exclusive Buddy - Britannia - made the list, as well as the Canada Exclusive Buddy - Maple. The list of 13 Buddies, available in September, are: Amber, Britannia, Fetch, Gobbles, Halo, Maple, Peace, Pumkin, Silver, Slither, Snowboy, Spangle, and Spinner. WOW! Two white bears, a ty-dyed fabric bear Buddy and two country exclusives make a very unique group of Buddies!

Several collectors who placed their orders on the first day orders were accepted are receiving their Clubby Beanie Buddies I and II (and their free Ty Collectors Cards! (Collectors of the Series III cards will notice they look like the clear cards where the Beanie card fits to the Buddy card.)

Rumor is spreading that Pumkin, Tracker, and Bubbles are retiring on November 29th. A preview of the announcements was found by a reader on the Ty website. Only "tyme" will tell if this actually takes place then!

The rumor panned out to be true this time! Bubbles, Tracker, and Pumkin' Buddies officially retired this morning. As Pumkin' was only out for a short time, it's value could be eventually be that of the Twigs Buddy over time. (Twigs was introduced on 9/30/98 and retired 12/31/98!)

Ty surprised us by retiring two Buddies today ... Jake and Peking. (Jake is one of the "original 9" and Peking came in the second release by Ty. I feel certain we can expect much more in the next few days, as there are still LOTS of current Buddies!

What a big day in the Retirement Home for Buddies today! Off to an early start, Ty retired Chip, Gobbles, and Spinner. Then a BIG announcement (early in the morning of Dec. 13th, but noted as retiring on Dec. 12th, seven (7) more Buddies - Snort, Jabber, Rover, Pinky, Waddle, Stretch, and Snowboy! WOW! Snowboy somewhat surprised us, but all December shipments should be on their way now; we really wouldn't expect him to show up on future orders anyway - with Christmas trees on his scarf and hat! (He's one of my favorites! :) That just leaves Peanut, the Royal Blue Elephant, left in the original 9 and ALL retired in the second release (see below). I think it's safe to say we can expect him to retire SOON as well!!! (There are now 15 current Buddies left on the list!!!)

... WOW - What a Start to a New Year! ...

A big day!!! 31 New Beanie Buddies!!! And for the first time ever, a variety of sizes for some! The Buddies are getting bigger and bigger! Now, there are certain Buddies in regular, large. Xlarge, and jumbo! Peace the Bear now comes in 3 additional sizes ... large, Xlarge, and jumbo ... for a total of 4 !!! Fuzz is also available in a new "large" size, making him in 2 sizes (reg and large); and Hippie was just released in regular, large, and Xlarge. Per a MBBBW Exclusive from Ty, Inc. - the actual measured sizes are: regular - 16 inches; large - 22 inches; Xlarge - 27 inches; and jumbo - 48 inches. WOW, a 4 ft Buddy! Retailers should be able to order these new Buddies beginning tomorrow. The prices? Noone knows yet! (A list of all the new Buddies can be found below - "Release #7").

So .... the updated Beanie Buddy count --- 31 Retired; 46 Current !!! (as of 1/4/00)

What! A new kid on the block? A light-blue Peanut Beanie Buddy has now surfaced. Although it has not been officially announced on the Ty website, pictures and auctions are about of the light blue version Peanut. It's interesting to note that the hang tag refers still to the royal blue Peanut. Now speculation is abound!!! Is this Buddy a "mistake", a rare "find", erroneously unmentioned on Ty's site??? Some feel it may be following in the footsteps of the Wingless Quackers Buddy. Only time will tell, but we'll keep our eyes out for this one.

MBBBW announced today that Ty retailers who attended the Nuremberg Toy Faire were able to order six Germania Beanie Buddies. Perhaps Ty will make an announcement on the website soon. I expect this one will be a difficult one to find, at least in the U.S.

Guess we can't be too surprised that Peanut retired. After showing up in a light blue fabric last month, and never officially announced in that color ... the tag reads "royal blue" .... Peanut has ventured to the Retirement Home today!

Although it is very unusual to find an error or variance with a Buddy, compared to a Beanie Baby, the newly announced Buddies are showing up with "unnamed" hang tags. Scorch/Dragon, Dotty (in the UK), and Congo (in the UK) have been spotted with NO NAME other than in the "poem" itself. There are also rumors spread around the Net, etc. that there is a Red Digger version to accompany the orange one released. This appears to be only rumor at the time, but guess we can wait and see on this one. Several of the new Buddies have Beanie counterparts that were available in different styles, ie Lizzy, Rainbow, Digger, etc. So it's easy to believe how rumors can get started. (Remember all the versions of Rainbow, with the spike/collar vs Iggy episode?)

Ty retired the third NEW Buddy today ... in a row! Monday it was the 2000 Signature Bear, Tuesday was Hippie, and today Flippity, the blue Bunny, has retired. AND before Easter has even arrived. (I'm just wondering if we should anticipate a new bunny Buddy by then .... perhaps pink, lavender? Wouldn't make it by Easter though, unless they just started "showing up" like LB Peanut or Wingless Quackers did!!! :) Flippity is now the 4th of the new Buddies to already retire this year!

Looks like we're starting off this week just as like week started. Ty retired 4 Buddies last week, one each day for 4 days. Today Ty retired the Princess Buddy! Boy, I'm sorry to see that one go ... what a beautiful bear! My prediction .... Fuzz Buddy will retire next. He's the oldest one yet to retire!

Expected but unexpected? One new Buddy, Rex the Tyrannosaurus, was introduced by Ty today. (Wisest the Beanie Baby was also announced in the Ty Newsflash). Can we later expect Steg the Buddy as well? Guess we'll just wait and see!

A Germania Buddy arrived in Germany today. Reported earlier by MBBBW (on February 5th), Ty retailers who attended the Nuremberg Toy Faire were able to order six Germania Buddies. The Germania Buddy has a 4th generation swing tag, which reads: "Germania the Beanie Baby was the first Beanie Baby to have its poem in a language other than English!"

Some hot Buddy news hit the Internet today! It has been reported that a few Ty-Dyed Digger Beanie Buddies were received at a store in Memphis, Tennessee. As you are probably aware, there was never a ty-dyed Digger Beanie Baby (only orange and red versions). There is a Claude Ty-Dyed Beanie Baby, but the color variations are not as they are on this Buddy. And the tag on the new Buddy reads "Digger"! So what's going on? Did they erroneously escape the Ty Warehouse? How many more may show up? Various sites report there are still 6 boxes in the Warehouse ... but are there 6 Buddies in each box? Tyme will tell.

Along with the retirement of Sakura Beanie Baby, Ty also sent the Britannia Buddy to the retirement home. Sure do hate to see that one go. I have never even seen one! The productivity of Britannia was quite limited, and has not been seen in Ty shipments in the UK for the past few months. Guess it wasn't a big surprise, just a big disappointment.

Ty retired two Buddies today ... Slither (introduced on 8/31/99) and Weenie (introduced 1/4/00). Looks like Halo, Maple, Peace, and Spangle Buddies are all that's left to retire, excluding the 2000 releases. Maybe Ty is preparing for MORE new Buddies!

Following the first promotional Buddy giveaway on April 30th of the 'Peace' Buddy, today Spangle was given away to children at Yankee Stadium.

Well, well! Exactly one month ago today, May 6th, Ty-Dyed Digger Buddies appeared at a store in Tennessee. Everyone wondered ... is is real? an error? are there more to follow? And then today, this infamous Digger appears on the Ty website, under 'current Buddies' .... just quietly sneaks his way on the site. (Very much like the Light Blue Peanut!) It has been reported recently that more of this special Digger are making their way into various retail stores across the country, in Canada, and also in the UK. That would be a nice Buddy to have in a collection .... there is no Beanie counterpart to match this particular Buddy! (The Digger Beanie Baby only came in red and orange!)

Over a four day period, June 24-27, during the Dallas Gift Show attendance by retailers, collectors waited patiently for an announcement of possible new Beanie Babies, Buddies, Kids, and more. Noone knew what to expect ... only that NEW products would be introduced. Word spread quickly across the internet ... with enough information to collectors to know that new Beanies and Buddies were to debut soon.

The UK Spring Fair (February 4-8) has now settled all the questions regarding the much rumored Buckingham Buddy. It was officially debuted at the Fair (various news and information can be found on the February News Page on this site). It is anticipated to be a much sought after and hard-to-find Buddy. I'm sure it is a beautiful Buddy, as it's Beanie counterpart (which just recently retired). It has not yet been officially announced on Ty's website.

Ty has announced the retirement of Germania Buddy today. This Buddy was announced by MBBBW as appearing at the Nuremberg Toy Faire in Germany on February 5, 2000. It reportedly arrived in Germany on May 4, 2000.

Many people have anticipated the release of a Sakura Buddy. As a bit of a surprise, however, Ty officially announced this Buddy on the website today (unlike the Germania Buddy which showed up at the Show in Germany). I expect this Buddy will be very hard to find, and for most probably quite expensive. Good Luck in your search ... it IS a beautiful Buddy!!!

Ty retired Zip the Beanie Buddy this morning. Zip was introduced on January 4, 2000. Of the 31 Buddies released on that day, only Lip, Rainbow, and Jumbo and Extra Large Peace are still current.

Ty announces a Spring 2001 Introduction, with Beanie Babies, Beanie Buddies, and Attic Treasures. Among the new Buddies are Ariel (nice!), Baldy, Cassie, Hornsly, India, Inky and Trumpet. (The Inky Buddy shown is pink ... wonder if a tan one will show up as well?) Although these 7 Buddies were announced on March 30th, the introduction date is listed on April 1, 2001 on Ty's site. April 1 is also the beginning of "The People's Beanie" ... a busy day for an April Fool Day! ... and a Sunday! Things are really stirring at Ty right now!

Ty posted a Newsflash, introducing seven new Beanie Babies (May 2001 Releases). Along with this introduction was the announcement of one new Buddy, GLORY (a USA Exclusive). (The Ty site lists Glory as having a May 1, 2001 release date.) Many have anticipated (hoped) that this Buddy would be released one day; it's Beanie counterpart is a favorite to many collectors. Along with the announcement of this new Buddy release, the retirement of three Buddies was announced - Floppity, Baldy, and Inky. (Baldy and Inky were justed released on April 1st, 2001! ... a short timespan before retirement!)

Ty's latest introduced Buddy was Glory ... a USA Exclusive ... announced on Ty's website on 4/26/01, with an 'introduction' date of 5/1/01. Today Ty retires this Buddy ... a month and a half later. With the upcoming Dallas Gift Show (June 23-26), it is anticipated that new Buddies will be introduced. We await with GREAT anticipation to see which Buddies will be next!

The Dallas Gift Show unveiled seven new Buddies ... Luke, Pugsly, Seal, Sunny, Periwinkle, Mellow, and Celebrate - the 15th Ty Anniversary Bear. Ms Janie had top news from a retailer who attended the Show. Reportedly, retailers will be able to order these Buddies for shipments in July. BUT, only retailers who attended the Show will be allowed to order the Anniversary Buddy (which is also accompanied by the Anniversary Beanie Baby!) THAT will probably be one hard Buddy to find, if this report proves true!

Ty officially introduced the six new Buddies this afternoon, with no mention (yet) of Celebrate, the Anniversary Bear Buddy. The new Buddies announced: Luke, Pugsly, Seal, Sunny, Periwinkle, and Mellow (as reported above).

Ty has announced the retirement of Buddies Trumpet the Elephant and Pugsly the Dog this morning. Pugsley was a bit of a surprise, as he was just introduced at the Dallas Gift Show (and officially announced by Ty on July 3rd) - barely a month old.

2001 Holiday Teddy Buddy (along with its Beanie counterpart) was officially sent to the Ty retirement home this afternoon. We suspected it was about time that the holiday products retire. Perhaps the 1997 Holiday Teddy Buddies (all sizes) will retire soon as well, along with Loosy and Snowball. Either Ty is working on a special announcement or is experiencing technical problems ... the Ty website was down all morning. There is a rumor floating around, however, of perhaps a Smooch and Sizzle Buddy (all in preparation for Valentines' Day I suppose.) They would make nice Buddies, though. Just hope Smooch Buddy would be easier to find than the Smooch Beanie. Tyme ... just wait!!! We shall see!

Ty announced a countdown newsflash, as everyone anxiously awaited for 12:00 Midnight to arrive. The newsflash was promptly posted of the retirement of 11 Beanie Babies, 9 Buddies, and 14 Attic Treasures. This at least has narrowed down the list of current Buddies, especially with the announcement of 15 Buddies just four days ago. The 9 Beanie Buddies to retire ... Rainbow, Employee Bear, Roam, Batty (mocha and black versions), Coral, Swoop, B.B. Bear, Loosy, and Snowball. Looks like Ty has some interesting surprises in store for collectors in 2002 ... perhaps new country Exclusive Buddies soon as well? We shall see!

With a different twist of releasing Ty products, Ty first introduced the variety of March releases in the March/April issue of 'Mary Beth's Beanies & More' magazine. The magazine began surfacing at retailers the first of March, and soon word was spread of new March Buddies released by Ty (along with Beanie Babies and Beanie Boppers). Today Ty posted an announcement on the Ty website, which read "Visit your local Ty Authorized Retailer to see the 17 new March designs from Ty!" Shortly after that announcement, the five new Buddies were posted in the current/retired listing on Ty's site. The new Buddies are CInders, Dearest, Pounce, Legs, and Wrinkles.

WOW! 32 World Cup Soccer Bear Buddies to collect? Hmmm Now how many collectors will be lucky enough to find ALL of them. Or will there even be 32 Buddies, like the Beanie counterparts? Although not officially introduced on the Ty website, the Ty retailer page lists the World Cup Bears on the order form. Many websites, including ours, had received 'rumors' that this would happen soon. But many didn't expect 32 Beanies AND 32 Buddies! Which will be the hardest and most rare? Tyme will tell. Although I suspect the World Cup winner 'Champion' Bear will be a nice one to have! Along with Champion, Ty also introduced Dizzy and Hero Buddies as well! Happy Hunting! * Now we just have to wonder exactly how many will there be! Who knows with Ty ... maybe just one Exclusive Champion Bear Buddy maybe?

The Champion Buddy version has now been shipped and received, as far as we know at Doodle's Page, only in Japan though. A reader has sent a link to us of the Japan and USA version (currently posted on the news page of our site). The tag of the Japan Champion is written in Japanese ... probably an English version when it shows up in other countries. At least we know now that there WILL be 32 matching Buddies to go with their counterpart Beanies.

Well, it didn't take long. The Champion Buddy has now appeared in the U.S. today. Martin has sent us a photo of Champion Japan ... but from Japan, so the tag is written in Japanese. Ms Janie has posted pictures from a reader who has found other versions of Champion ... ie Turkey, USA, etc. So if you are a collector of 'variations', looks like you've got some busy work ahead. It has also been noticed that the hang tag of the Buddy has the same 'poem' information as the Beanie, which World Cup facts from that particular country. A 'World Class' Buddy was first given away at the NY Yankess game on August 8, 2004, and retired that same day.  A second 'World Class' Buddy ... has been released and is listed as 'current' on Ty's website.  This Buddy looks like 'Centennial' Buddy ... the badge is the same on it's chest but on the foot it says NY (interlocking).  It is a "stadium exclusive" as noted on Ty's site.  Presumably they have a 'booth' at the NY Yankee stadium for people to sign up for an MBNA account. Ty introduces an adorable SnowWoman ... 'Coolstina', a matching SnowMan 'Coolston', and 'Admiral (large)'.  The matching Beanie Babies Coolstina and Coolston were introduced as well.  With the hot weather finally subsiding, these Beanie Babies / Buddies really do look 'cool'  :)

Also an interesting note ... the Christmas version of 'Pooky', Garfield lil' bear with a Christmas hat, has been placed on Ty's current list.  What's interesting? ... this Buddy was introduced on 9/30/05 and retired 12/29/05.  Will Pooky reappear now? ... or simply a mistake by the Ty webmaster?  We shall soon see.
