 ...  It's an 'Exclusive'
One of our readers, Sandra, writes:
Hi Deb, Hope all is well with you.  When I wrote you earlier, I mentioned how I LOVE the new Ronald McDonald Beanie Baby.  Of course, I can't pay the secondary price out there right now, and was hoping it would eventually be available to everyone.  I have a pretty decent collection of Ronald McDonald "figures", including an old one my Grandmother gave me many years ago, and I  love my Ronald McDonald Madame Alexander doll.  Now I'm pretty frustrated, as I just noticed on Ty's site that it is now listed as an "EXCLUSIVE".  Oh, my!  What am I going to do????  It states "McDonalds Worldwide Owner Operator convention exclusive".  I think there will be a lot of disappointed collectors (Ty and McDonalds) if this Beanie is not available to everyone.  Maybe a Teenie Beanie Baby this summer at McDonalds like you mentioned earlier?  Guess that's better than nothing.  And don't you think it's interesting that Ty still list it as 'current' if it was only distributed at the Convention?  Take care and TTy soon !   Your hopeful friend, Sandra

Note:  Thanks for sharing the info, Sandra.  I've always said 'Don't ever give up!"   Ty has stated in the past to 'expect the unexpected'.  So we'll just all keep our fingers crossed and wait and see!

...  Interesting McDonald's Happy Meal 'Trivia Facts'
Posted on the 'Atlanta Journal-Constitution website (ajc.com):
Playing with food
Twenty five years ago, a McDonald's marketing genius came up with a plan: Put a toy in a box with some food and the kids will want the toy, so the parents will buy them the food. Thus, the Happy Meal was born. This year, McDonald's celebrates the 25th Anniversary of their iconic combo.

There are 25 'tasty nuggets' (or facts) about the Happy Meal in the article, with the last one reading:
"There will be 13 different toy campaigns this year celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Happy Meals. They will include Barbie and Tony Hawk toys and Neopets. But the company won't announce what the official, 25th Anniversary toy, which launches July 23, will be. (But the folks at the collectors convention said they've heard it's plush McDonaldland characters.)"

 ...  New May Ty Products
While many wonder what new Ty products are around the corner for May, a search on eBay shows a couple of auctions for (upcoming) Beanie Babies.  The much rumored bear 'Sam' appears to shortly be a reality, with three versions - red, white, and blue.  Also mentioned in the auctions are 'Marshall' (horse), 'Luau' (pig), 'Tipsy' (cow), and 'Jack' (UK flag bear with black nose).  (The earlier retired UK Exclusive 'Jack' bear has a flag nose.)

Added note:
In addition to the above Beanie Babies, a Ty Cyberboard post points to new May Beanie Buddies and Punkies as well.  The new Buddies ... Blue, Red, White, Blessed and Swoop; the new Punkies ... Mambo, Swoosh, Topsy, and Zapp.

All the above (yet to be announced) products can be viewed on cindysbeans.com.

With no official announcement, the 'Ronald McDonald' bear has appeared in Ty's current Beanie Baby listing.  It is unclear if, where and when this Beanie will be sold.  Reportedly, this Beanie was given to those who attended the McDonald's World Wide Convention recently (although unconfirmed).   I do know, it IS adorable, and one many would like to add to their collection!

 ...  The Latest 'Cherish' News

Sue writes:
Hi
I thought that you/your readers might like to see these pictures of the Dear Beanies that was kindly donated by Heather Weinert and to which I have given the 'Boglin's Knitwear' treatment.

Dear is wearing a custom-designed and hand-knitted cardigan made from the softest fluffy pink wool with a contrast panel of white into which the name 'DEAR' has been knitted, on the back of the cardigan. Ribbon roses and pearly beads have been added to the back and tiny beads also edge the sleeves of the cardigan.

This Beanie would make a beautiful Mother's Day gift, so is going on auction on eBay this week under seller ID sue_owen. All proceeds from the auction will go towards my sponsorship for Race for Life, details of which are on my website, along with how you can enter a draw to win a beautiful pink mohair Steiff Teddy Bear.

Look out for more special Beanies and collectables going on auction to raise further sponsorship for Race for Life - including a fantastic London Marathon package coming very soon!

Best wishes, Sue

 ...  Teenie Beanies?  It's True!
With all the recent discussions on the return of Teenie Beanie Babies at McDonald's, Randy confirms that ARE coming back!  He writes:
Hi,
I have been reading on the Ty Talk Cyberboard about Teenie Beanies coming back to McDonald’s and have been wondering why I hadn’t heard anything about it before then. Why? Because I work for McDonald’s as a manager and I am in charge of ordering all the supplies for our store. I get advanced info on what new food items are coming up and then have to figure out how much to order. Happy Meal items are ordered automatically but I also get advanced info on them and all I knew about is what would be available through the end of May. I haven’t received an update going any farther than that yet.  So what about Teenie Beanies? Are they coming back? All I can say is ‘write it down.’ What you have read on the Cyberboard is true.

I called customer service for our distributor on Friday and they confirmed that Teenies Beanies will be in Happy Meals towards the end of July as a part of a Happy Meal 25th Anniversary Celebration. I was told that they will be all bears with different emblems on their chest. Also one bear will be a McDonald’s style bear. As to whether it will just have a McDonald’s emblem or will be dressed in a Ronald McDonald type outfit, the person I talked to was not sure.  With all the other Teenie Beanie promotions, I was a customer. This time around I will be on the other side of the counter, which is kind of scary. On the plus side, I’ll get to see them before the customers do, which is kind of cool.

It will be interesting to see how this will all go over. Beanies are not as big now as they used to be. ‘Finding Nemo’ was about the most intense Happy Meal promotion I have gone through so far so I am wondering how Teenie Beanies will stack up against that one?  I will be sure to pass along any additional info if I am allowed to.  There is still Flyer info to come in the months ahead. The POP (Point Of Purchase) kit and of course, the Happy Meal display itself. And don't EVEN ask if I can get hold of the display because the owner of the stores in our co-op has a strict policy concerning the return of the display to the main office when we are through with it. Hmm, have to wonder if a previous Beanie Baby promotion led to that decision?

...  Fire Ruins San Ysidro Ranch Kitchen
Suspected electrical fire ruins San Ysidro Ranch kitchen
4/13/04 ... by Camilla Cohee, News Press Staff Writer

An apparent electrical fire destroyed the kitchen at Montecito's San Ysidro Ranch but did not damage the adjacent dining room or rustic bistro below.

Firefighters suspect an overloaded or overheated circuit sparked the blaze, which broke out around 12:30 a.m. Monday in a crawl space under the kitchen. The ranch's night manager reported seeing smoke coming out of an electrical panel, and firefighters arrived shortly after.

The crew was forced to open walls and floors to douse the blaze within.

"It was difficult for us to get into, because the fire was concealed in the walls and floors, and we couldn't reach it with water," said Montecito Fire Battalion Chief Glen McLeod.

Angie Christensen, spokeswoman for the ranch, said Monday that the restaurant and bistro would be closed for the next couple of days. She said the staff was grateful that no extensive damage was done to the wooden building, a packing house built in the 1890s.

"It had burned down in the early 1900s and was rebuilt," she said.

She said the ranch is near full occupancy this time of year.

"Thankfully no one was hurt, and we'll be back and running within the next couple of days," she said.

Guests were served breakfast in another room, and food was brought up from owner Ty Warner's other hotel, the Four Seasons Biltmore.

There are plans to remodel the ranch kitchen as part of a larger revamp of the property. Ms. Christensen wasn't sure whether the entire remodel would occur now or in the future, as previously planned.

Have a Happy and Blessed Easter !

 ...  McDonald's Happy Meal turns 25
Fast-food giant's kiddie creation has become a fixture of American culture.
By MATTHEW KAUFFMAN
The Hartford (Conn.) Courant
04/11/2004

A quintessentially American meal is celebrating a big birthday this year, but it's not meatloaf or spare ribs or Mom's apple pie.

It is the humble Happy Meal, rolled out 25 years ago under the Golden Arches in a campaign to build loyalty among the youngest of McDonald's customers.

It is not the Happy Meal's culinary contributions that make it a national classic. Rather, the original kiddy meal wins a place in American gastronomy because it has consistently reflected so much of American culture, from the crowning of convenience to the troubling rise in marketing to kids to, most recently, the deep concern over nutrition and childhood obesity.

The earliest Happy Meal toys were decidedly lame - a plastic ID bracelet with stick-on letters, a puzzle lock, a Mr. Spock secret compartment ring. But then came a 10-year exclusive deal with Disney. Characters from "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," "The Lion King," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Hercules," "Mulan," "Tarzan," "Monsters, Inc.," "Lilo & Stitch" and "Finding Nemo" were all miniaturized for Happy Meal bags.

For some kids, the food became secondary to digging down for the prize. The supremacy of the toy reached absurd proportions in 1997, when McDonald's started stashing Teenie Beanie Babies - pint-sized versions of the insanely popular beanbag animals - into Happy Meals. On the orders of their children, adults were gleefully walking out of restaurants, extracting the plastic-wrapped toy, and stuffing the meal into garbage cans.

A new 'Ask Ty' question and answer has been posted on Ty's website:
Q: Is this what you had planned for when you started to make Beanie Babies? Did you think it would get this big, and touch and affect so many people? (submitted by Taggerung)
A: My original plan for Beanies was to create a soft, cute, under-stuffed toy that a child could hold in the palm of their hand and afford with their allowance. Did I think Beanies "would get this big?" . . . . it crossed my mind a time or two !

 ...  New UK Additional Tags
Daphne writes to us with the following:
Now that the new Beanies have hit the UK, we've put up pics of the new, additional Euro tags on the latest releases.

It's a single tag, with printing on both sides, attached behind the regular Ty hang tag. The safety information in French, German, Italian and Spanish states:
'Safety precaution Remove all tickets and accessories before giving the item to a child Keep tag for reference Surface wash'

To view the tag photos / info, visit the 'Bears and Beans' website here.

... Thanks for sharing with us, Daphne

 ...  Ty Newsflash
Ty has introduced a new Ty Store Exclusive - 'Siesta'.  This little donkey (or burro) is perhaps in celebration of 'Cinco de Mayo'.  And won't this Beanie look nice along with 'Piñata'!

The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The Fifth Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, but is also celebrated in other parts of the country and in U.S.cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16.  (Click here for more info on 'Cinco de Mayo')

...  New Ty Trademark
Sly reports to Ms. Janie of a new Ty Trademark application.  On March 19, 2004, Ty Inc. applied for the registration trademark "Charitee".  Perhaps another Charity Beanie?  We shall see.

 ...  News from Japan
There's a new bus in town ... well, in Japan anyway.  Our friend Sakurako of Bottega Beanies has shared information and photos of two different styles 'buses for Beanies' that she received at a store in Japan.  These buses are lightweight and appear to be similar in construction to the 'Circus' Beanie Babies display.  For more info, click on the link below.  (Thanks for sharing, Sakurako)

 ...  New 'Ask Ty' Q & A
A new 'Ask Ty' question and answer has been posted on Ty's website:
Q: What was the best April Fool's joke anyone ever played on you? (submitted by goldbear)
A: I have been at the receiving end of more April Fool's Day jokes than I care to remember. Several years ago someone filled my car from floor to ceiling with Beanies !

...  The Two Noses of Piñata
The recently discussed two 'nose' versions of 'Piñata' are now appearing at retailers.  A reader has sent a photo to Ms. Janie of each Beanie, which can be viewed by clicking here.  (Sounds like the 'flag nose' version may be a bit more difficult to find.)

 ...  What's to Follow?
In the footsteps of the newly announced Beanie Babies, Buddies, and Pluffies, perhaps some retirements soon?  What's your guess as to what may retire?  And perhaps an announcement and/or retirement of 'Dear'?

The April 'Beanie Baby of the Month' is ........ ?

You may want to keep your eye on the Ty website.
