... A New Charity Beanie?
Bobbie writes:
I
hope this New Year is bringing you great joy.
I have written to you recently because both our dads have had major surgery. My dad is back to work; bowling and just spent a Christmas with the grandbabies that we weren’t sure would be as great as it was.
I am writing to you now on another sad event, the Tsunamis. I have just left Ask Ty, I wrote to ask him if there is any way his great fans could donate to this disaster thru his website. Maybe the question will make it to the final 4, maybe not.
I
have been notified by my District Representative at Avon, that believe
it or not, Avon lost some Representatives and their families in the
disaster. I had no idea Avon was so worldwide. Avon is setting up a
fund to raise money for the countries involved, mostly Indonesia. They
are matching donations 2:1.
I thought possibly Ty, since he has supported the Red Cross in the
past, he could come up with a way we, as fans could help, thru his
site, so people know the money will get there for sure. Not that Avon
won’t, but I know there are just as many beanie fans affected by
this as well.
So I am asking you, do you think he will come up with something? I hope so.
Have
a great New Year with you and yours,
Bobbie in Tacoma, WA
Doodle's note:
Thanks for writing, Bobbie. (So glad to hear your Father is
doing well.) Perhaps a new Ty Charity Beanie is just around the
corner, with donations contributed to this disastrous event.
Tyme will tell!

... Ty Warner Donates $100,000 for Cleanup
By CAMILLA COHEE
NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER
Beanie Babies creator Ty Warner is donating $100,000 to have remnants
of an old pier that is considered hazardous to swimmers, surfers and
walkers removed at Butterfly Beach.
In 1986, the California State Lands Commission included the beach in
its Coastal Hazards Removal Program because of some exposed pieces of
the pier, which existed at Butterfly Beach prior to March 1983.
After obtaining all of the necessary permits for the cleanup, the
budget for the program was cut. The commission considered asking
neighbors for donations to carry out the project when Mr. Warner
stepped in and offered to cover the costs. He owns the adjacent Four
Seasons Biltmore Resort along with the Montecito Country Club, San
Ysidro Ranch and the Sandpiper Golf Course.
The cleanup effort will involve removing pieces of the old groin,
steel pipe piles near the public access stairs and other materials.
Cleanup will begin in January, weather permitting, and will take
approximately two weeks.
Ken Palley, a longtime environmental activist and former chairman of
the Surfrider Foundation's Santa Barbara chapter, praised Mr. Warner's
efforts.
"I hope this encourages others to show generosity and
environmental leadership in other areas of the coast and ocean,"
he said.
Mr. Warner said in a prepared statement, "I wanted to contribute
to providing safer and cleaner beaches in our community."
Originally, the State Lands Commission obtained permits to clean 21
sites along the California coast. To date, only Las Tunas Beach in
Malibu has been cleaned up, through a combination of state, litigation
and private funds.
Mr. Warner's donation is one of several others made locally including
$500,000 in 2003 to restore the Channel Drive bike path and $1.5Êmillion
earlier this year to complete the new Ty Warner Sea Center on Stearns
Wharf. He is also proposing to fund the construction of a ramp to
Butterfly Beach for people with disabilities. Currently, there is no
such access.
This proposal is part of a larger project that will undergo
environmental review by Santa Barbara County officials. The pier
removal is unrelated to other cleanup efforts at Butterfly Beach,
which became a hot party spot for college students last summer.
County officials, neighbors and representatives of the Montecito
Association have been working on problems related to trash, traffic
and partying at the beach.

A new 'Ask Ty' question and answer has been posted on Ty's website:
Q: Do
you decorate your tree or the corporate christmas tree with Beanies
and Jingle Beanies? (submitted by labonte18)
A: The trees at our office are decorated more traditional with ribbon,
glass ornaments and lights. My house is decorated with Holiday Beanies
from as far back as Snowball and the 1997 Holiday Teddy. The Christmas
Trees at the Santa Barbara and New York Four Seasons cheerfully
display . . . Jingle Beanies !

... Next?
It's always fun to guess what
may be next with Ty. With Valentine newbies already
introduced by Ty, what will January releases reveal? Perhaps
some retirements around the corner?
Many of our schedules are
quite busy this time of year. It's hard to believe that Christmas
is just a few days away. My, how 'tyme' flies! You may
want to consider sharing a gift with someone in need. (Our
neighborhood has 'adopted' a family this year ... with toys, clothes,
and food being donated.) How about a Jingle Beanie to use is place
of a bow on that special gift, as one reader has suggested.
Just enjoy the season and remember the reason!

Leeanne writes:
Hi Deb, Hope
you are having a wonderful Holiday season! :D I know you are
probably busy, as most of us are this tyme of year. And we all
appreciate the extra tyme you find to keep us all updated with the
latest Beanie info. I wanted to let you know, in case you hadn't
noticed yet, that Ty has done a silent retirement today in Ty
Store. Earlier today the Beanies Drumstick
and the three Columbus bears - Nina,
Pinta, and Santa Maria
were all available at Ty Store. They are all now listed as
'retired' in Ty's Beanie Baby listing. Interesting that Ty didn't
make an announcement. That poor turkey was missing in action for a
while in Ty Store, first still listed as still current. Now all is
clear. Take care, have a great holiday, and thanks
again!!!!! Your buddy Leeanne

letting us know, Leeanne. You're definitely correct. They

... CHERISH Auction Update
Sue Owen shares the following:
As
promised, one final auction before I lay down my knitting needles for
the year...
This one is for Holiday Teddy 2004 and 'Boglin's Knitwear' - a fluffy dark red and green sweater with a snowman knitted from yarn similar to the fabric from which Holiday Teddy is made. The snowman has a tiny scarf and beads and buttons have been used for his features. Tiny clear beads are scattered across the background to suggest snow falling.
On the back there is a snowflake knitted and beaded. 2004 is also knitted into the back design.
A dark red star fastens the sweater.
Here is
the link to the auction, which runs until Wednesday 22nd December.

Over the
break I will be updating the website at www.cherishonline.co.uk

... CHERISH Auction Update
Sue Owen writes:
Although
the main CHERISH auctions for 2004 have now ended, with Bill Gates
signed Speckles fetching a respectable £379 for research into
children's cancers, there are a couple of individual auctions coming
up before we really do pack up for the Christmas break.
Just started on eBay this evening is a wonderful package comprising
the Windy Ridge Bears CHERISH Charity Bear 2004 (the #1 bear of the
edition of 50), a gold and black sweater designed especially for him,
a specially produced black and gold Windy Ridge Bears polo shirt (for
his new owner) and a gift package of Bear Essentials Toiletries (also
from Windy Ridge Bears).
Stef Probert of Windy Ridge Bears was voted Planet Teddy Bear Artist
of 2003 and was also nominated for the British Bears Artist Award 2004
in the miniature groups category.
The start price for the package reflects the original selling price
for the bear alone, which was £40 - more than reasonable for a
hand-made mohair bear in a limited edition. Stef's bears are fast
becoming collectors' items - so don't miss out on this chance to add a
wonderful bear to your collection - or gift it to a lucky friend or
relative!
Click
here to view the auction
Also - a reminder about the sealed bid silent auction for the CHERISH
Christmas Creations, for which we are accepting bids until midnight
GMT this Sunday. There are some great items up for sale and all for
children's cancer research - so please bid in the spirit of charity
and Christmas - all items have been made with love by several familiar
Beanie loving people - Lisa of Planet Beanes, Marie of About Beanies,
Bean Watcher, PattiBuddy, Ferocious Platypus, Stef of Windy Ridge
Bears, Rodeo Queen and myself.
Bids currently total over £200 and we would welcome some more -
please!
Best wishes,
Sue

... The
Beauty of Beanbag Diplomacy
USNews.com - Posted 12/4/04
The July flight home to Arizona was uneventful for 14-year-old Alison
Goulder, until she opened a copy of U.S.News
& World Report. There she read a Whisper about a Washington
law firm sending care packages to troops in Iraq. What caught her eye:
Greenberg Traurig lawyers also included Beanie Babies for troops to
give Iraqi tots. "I thought that was something I could do to make
the children's lives better," recalls the teen. She started with
50 of her own stuffed Beanies. Then she involved her school and the
whole Scottsdale area. In one day, Alison collected 3,000 Beanies, and
Ty, the manufacturer, added 3,200 more. "We stopped making
goals," she says, "because we broke them all the time."
The eighth grader delivered over 27,000 Beanies to Washington, and now
she's going national. "Once she gets something in her head,"
says her mother, Suzanne Goulder, "she
won't give up." The military is thankful. "The most
important thing we have in this war," Gen. Richard
Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, tells Whispers,
"is American resolve. And she's showing American resolve."

The “Orphans of War” campaign, sponsored by the Boca-based

“The reward for me is getting the opportunity to express the fact
that Americans have compassion for the legitimate human needs of
Iraqis,” Lt. Col. Bob Weinstein, 53, told the Boca News.
