Tyler Treadway: Book donations not the only way to support troops in Iraq
By Tyler Treadway staff writer
November 30, 2003
I've been pushing the Books for Troops project pretty hard for the past few weeks. (Drop new or "lightly read" paperbacks in the boxes at any Martin County library Monday through Dec. 13.)
But there are other ongoing projects you can take part in to show your concern for troops stationed in Iraq. For instance:
• The Martin County chapter of the American Red Cross Martin County is collecting "Treasures for Troops," gift packages for servicemen and -women throughout the world.
To buy bags or make donations to the project, call (772) 287-2002.

• Teresa Hilbig, 12-year-old daughter of Bill and Beth Hilbig of Palm City, has been taking part in "Beanies for Baghdad," a project in which soldiers give out small toys and school supplies donated by people in the United States to kids in Iraq.  An Army major started "B4B" after his sister sent him a Beanie Baby named "Courage," and he gave the toy to an Iraqi girl.  Now toys and school supplies are being delivered by soldiers in their off-duty hours to kids in schools, hospitals and community centers.

Packages for the Beanies for Baghdad can be sent to Staff Sgt. Kirk E. Wallace, the program manager in Iraq, at:
SSG Wallace, Kirk E.
HQ CJTF-7, CMD GRP - CG
CPA
APO AE 09342

Or, for more information, check out www.beaniesforbaghdad.com, the project's Website.

... A Time For Giving
Woodridge Students Reach Out to Iraqi Children
Chicago Suburban Newspapers
It takes more than guns and bombs to win a war; soldiers must also win over the hearts and minds of the populace and gain their trust. Students at Sipley School in Woodridge are helping in that effort in Iraq by sending stuffed animals and dolls for U.S. soldiers to give out to Iraqi children.

Letters were sent home with students the week before Thanksgiving requesting stuffed animals for Iraqi children. Teachers Kathy Siran and Carrie Berger and teacher assistant Patty Schrimsher, who organized the drive, said they were surprised by the rapid response. The library shelves were filled with more than 100 stuffed animals in just three days.

``It was an immediate response,'' Berger said. ``My kids see all the stuffed animals and they don't play with them, because they know what it's for.''

Students donated Teddy bears, dolls, Barbies and Beanie Babies from their own collections.

... 'Santa Beanie'  /  ANSI Donations
The following information is posted on the ansi.org website, showing the generosity of people during this 'season of giving'.  Commenting on the program, Sara Desautels, ANSI program manager, says is well by stating - “When you stop and think that the beanie you donate might be the only toy that a child gets this Christmas, it really puts things in perspective for you.”

ANSI Staff Continues Annual "Season of Giving"
Once again, ANSI staff has demonstrated an understanding of the holidays with their annual “season of giving.” Members of the ANSI team in both the New York and Washington, DC, offices are participating in food, clothing and toy drives during November and December 2003. ....

ANSI’s New York City Operations office organized their 8th annual food and clothing drive along with 6th annual Beanie Baby drive for Santa Beanie. The contribution of four large boxes of canned goods and dry food items were again provided to the Bowery Mission, an organization that is currently feeding, sheltering, and clothing in excess of 500 people per day. This year’s contribution brings the total to nearly 50 boxes provided to the Mission in the past eight years.

Santa Beanie is a loving network of folks (elves) who team together each year to collect and deliver beanie babies to children in hospitals, homes, shelters and clinics. The Santa Beanie network delivered over 3000 beanie toys to children in need last year; and more than 35 toys have already been collected from ANSI staff.

... New 'Ask Ty' Q & A
A new 'Ask Ty' question and answer has been posted on Ty's website:
Q: Since Thanksgiving is coming up, which one of the Turkey Beanie Babies is your favorite? (submitted by 8885207)
A: I was thinking maybe Gobbles, but then I set them all on my desk and I just can't decide . . . I like them all!
As for my favorite dish - it's a toss up between raisin apple nut dressing and the candied yam casserole.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a great weekend!

... Agassi Foundation Donation Record Broken
As you may recall, last month (October 5th) news was reported that 'an unexpected donation by Ty Warner ... matched the initial $6.3 million raised' for the Agassi Foundation.  It has now been reported that this donation breaks the Agassi Foundation for a single donation.

Beanie Baby Creator Ty Warner Breaks Agassi Foundation Record for Single Donation LAS VEGAS, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 11/19/2003 --
The Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation (AACF) has received the largest single donation in its eight-year history from toy manufacturer Ty Warner, the founder and chairman of Ty, Inc. and creator of the Beanie Baby.

Warner has matched, dollar for dollar, the record-breaking $6.3 million tally raised this year through the Agassi Foundation's Grand Slam for Children benefit concert, which was held on October 4 in Las Vegas. This brought the total to $12.6 million. The funds go directly to benefit various children's programs in the Las Vegas area including the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy.

"From the extended school hours to the caring motivated staff members that work there, Agassi Prep is giving these children the support they need to succeed in life," said Warner. "The public/private partnership that Andre has helped forge makes this school a model for the charter school program nationally."

As testimony to his belief in the Agassi Prep charter school model, Warner has earmarked his $6.3 million donation to support the "Advantage Kids!" capital fundraising campaign toward the goal of expanding the school. Currently serving grades 3 - 7, the plan is to have a campus serving grades K-12 by the year 2006. With Warner's gift, the overall goal of $30 million is more than halfway realized -- with a total of $17 million now in the fund.

"I cannot fully express my gratitude toward Mr. Warner for his generous gift," said Agassi. "This single donation has taken us so much closer to helping these children realize their dreams of a brighter future."

Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. The special Ty Stardust, exclusive to Harrods, which was signed for CHERISH by Mohamed Al Fayed in Harrods on the day of the bear's launch, is now on seven-day auction on www.ebay.co.uk
under seller ID sue_owen

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3154540574

This item comes with a whole host of desirable and collectable items:

1) Stardust first day of release certificate number 003 signed by Patricia Roche
2) Two advertising posters - one that was on display before the launch day and one that was on display on launch day
3) A unique photograph of Patricia Roche (head of Ty Europe Ltd) who signed the certificates for the first 500 bears sold; Mohamed Al Fayed (owner of Harrods) and Ty Warner, showing the Stardust in the hand of Mohamed Al Fayed and on the shoulder of Ty Warner, is included in the auction. The Ty Beanie Baby 'Cure' signed at the same time by Ty Warner is also shown in the photograph. Cure will appear on auction at a later date.

This has to be the most exciting Stardust yet listed on auction!
As all proceeds will go, with Mr Al Fayed's blessing, to fund research into Children's Cancers (through Cancer Research UK), I would appreciate as much publicity as you are able to give the auction.

Many thanks and good luck to all who bid!

For those who feel that this may be out of their price range, there are other auctions currently running and new ones will start this Sunday including Cure signed by the wonderful and inspirational actress and singer Ann Jillian, a double mastectomy survivor. Many thanks to Marie Leimas for getting Cure and a CD signed by Ann for CHERISH and to Heather Softley for co-ordinating this project.

Best wishes,
Sue Owen

"In less than sixty days, people from all over the world will join together to celebrate the first century of aviation at the very site where the historic first manned, powered, controlled, sustained flights were made by Orville and Wilbur Wright on December 17, 1903. The six-day First Flight Centennial Celebration is designed to not only acknowledge the genius of the Wright brothers, but to honor all aviators around the world who followed in their footsteps, and the airplane’s evolution in the last century from the Wrights’ 1903 Flyer to supersonic jets and spacecraft. To date, 144,059 tickets have been sold for the First Flight Centennial Celebration, taking place December 12-17, 2003 at Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Tickets for December 17 have already sold out."

... 'Cherish' Update

Sue writes us with the following update:

CRACKERS FOR CHRISTMAS DRAW
We have been so lucky to receive some wonderful donations of collectables!
Many companies and designers have contributed their goods and time to this Draw.
Individuals have also contributed prizes and help.
Many thanks to all who have donated such wonderful prizes!

All proceeds will fund research by Cancer Research UK into Children's Cancers.

There are 7 main prizes and because the value of a collectable comes partly from the value that we as collectors place upon that item, it is almost impossible to rank these prizes in order of value.
Instead, we have decided to offer the first person whose name is drawn on December 14th first choice of the seven main prizes.
The second prizewinner will get second choice and so on.

Once all seven main prizes have been selected the remaining prizes will be allocated in a pre-determined order.

The main prizes (in no particular order)
A Steiff Classic Teddy Bear
A Cambrian Bears limited edition Mohair Bear
A unique signed Ty/Pompey package
A special signed Chubbley Retailer package
Two Signed Tatty Teddy Me to You Christmas figurines
Four Skansen Bean Bag Bears Cuddly Kids
A Gund Limited Edition Mohair Bear...
...and more!

... More Photos of Stardust !
And another lucky visitor at Harrods today ... Hayley of Beanzaddiction.  She writes:
I thought you might be interested to know, I have been to Harrods today (and phew, what a day!). Unfortunately I didn't get to meet the guy himself, but I did see some great stuff in Knightsbridge. I have written a report with photos of the bear itself, the jumbo bear, the real-live Stardust who wandered around the shop, plus a lot of the shop itself and the Christmas parade that happened as we queued!
It can all be seen on Beanzaddiction -

Have a great weekend!
